Engagement Ring Style
The first step in buying an engagement ring is to choose the style right for you. Does she prefer a classic style solitaire diamond ring? Or maybe a trellis or cathedral setting? Does she want an engagement ring with side stones? Perhaps the more modern look of a diamond tension set ring is really what she’s after.

If you are not sure what style appeals to her, and if she has not been dropping hints to you already, you could try to speak with a good friend of hers (or sibling) to help give you an idea of what she would be looking for. Also, take note of jewelry that she already wears. Does she wear yellow gold, white gold, or platinum? Does she prefer intricate design work or plain? We find that the greatest percentage of our customers are purchasing from our selection of diamond rings with side stones. For men who are making the purchase decision with no hint whatsoever, we find that the traditional solitaire diamond rings are the most popular choice.

Metal
Once the style has been decided, the next step is to choose the metal type. We purchase raw gold and platinum of only the finest quality and then prepare our own precious metal alloys (14k gold, 18k gold, and platinum: 950PT) in house to ensure the highest quality of our jewelry pieces.
We find that platinum is currently the most popular metal choice with 50% of our customers selecting platinum, 35% white gold, and 15% yellow gold. Platinum rings are more resistant to scratching and general wear and tear than white gold rings, but are a bit heavier and more expensive. White gold is much cheaper than platinum, but it is also softer so more likely to become marked under duress and show scratches and abrasions.

Diamond
The selection of the diamond is arguably the most important factor in buying an engagement ring. The first thing she will do when examining her new engagement ring is to put it on and move it back and forth in the light to see the diamond sparkle. Believe me, at this point you will want to see some fire and brilliance in that diamond! To achieve this, when selecting your diamond, keep in mind that the most important aspect by far is the quality of the cut.
For best results, search our diamond list for a diamond with a cut quality rating of ‘very good’ or better. |
 |

(An example of a diamond's light return) |
The cut quality of a diamond takes many things into account including the diamonds proportions, depth of the pavilion, table size, symmetry, etc. What we are looking for in an ideal cut diamond is optimum light return. A poorly cut diamond is going to show poor light return and will appear dull.
Secondary in importance to the cut of the diamond, is the color and clarity of the stone. Both color and clarity can greatly influence the price of the diamond. A diamonds color (not including fancy colors) will range from D (completely clear) to Z (yellowish or brownish in appearance). Clarity grades normally range from IF (internally flawless) to I3 (visible inclusions).

Budget
How much should you spend when buying an engagement ring?
Never spend beyond your means of course. A budget of two or
three months salary is a common guideline but is not always
adhered to. When buying an engagement ring, it is best to
set yourself a budget and then try to stay within the budget.
